Why I use Tung Oil, Rubio Monocoat and Odie's Oil
I choose these finishes because they let the wood be what it’s meant to be. These finishes soak into the wood instead of sitting on top of it, bringing out the grain, texture, and natural character without creating a thick, artificial layer.
I like how these finishes feel—warm, natural, and inviting—and how they age over time. Instead of peeling or chipping, they develop a patina that tells the story of use. They’re also easy to maintain and repair, which means my work can be cared for and refreshed without complicated refinishing.
Just as important, these finishes are safer for homes and everyday living. They align with how I build: intentionally, honestly, and with longevity in mind.

Mineral Oil and Bee's Wax (Walrus Oil and Wax)
Description
A food-safe finish combining Walrus Cutting Board Oil and Wood Wax to nourish and protect the wood while enhancing its natural color and grain. Leaves a smooth, soft satin finish.
I recommend mineral oil if you intend to cut on the board.  However, if the cutting is minimal, Rubio might be a nice choice.  Rubio is more suitable for display to light kitchen use.  In the event a board is marred by cutting, Rubio is easy to repair.  Mineral oil WILL REQUIRE periodic maintenance.  Mineral is absorbed by the wood.  There is no bonding or polymerisation making it more sensitive to everyday use. Â
This all said, mineral oil leaves a beautiful silky finish.
