Why I Use These Finishes

I choose tung oil, Rubio Monocoat, and Odie’s Oil because they let the wood be what it’s meant to be. These finishes soak into the wood instead of sitting on top of it, bringing out the grain, texture, and natural character without creating a thick, artificial layer.

I like how these finishes feel—warm, natural, and inviting—and how they age over time. Instead of peeling or chipping, they develop a patina that tells the story of use. They’re also easy to maintain and repair, which means my work can be cared for and refreshed without complicated refinishing.

Just as important, these finishes are safer for homes and everyday living. They align with how I build: intentionally, honestly, and with longevity in mind.

Tung Oil

Tung oil is a natural oil finish that soaks into the wood rather than sitting on top of it. It brings out the wood’s natural grain and color while giving the surface a warm, soft, hand-rubbed look. Because it becomes part of the wood, tung oil feels natural to the touch and ages gracefully over time.

Why people love it

  • Shows off the natural beauty of the wood

  • Won’t peel or crack like some surface finishes

  • Easy to maintain and refresh

  • Water-resistant for everyday use

  • Made from natural materials

Things to keep in mind

  • Not as scratch-resistant as hard, glossy finishes

  • Needs occasional re-oiling to stay looking its best

  • Can darken the wood slightly as it ages

  • Doesn’t provide heavy protection against harsh chemicals or standing water

Cleaning & Care Instructions

  • Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth

  • Clean with a slightly damp cloth when needed, then dry right away

  • Use mild soap only—avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners

  • Wipe up spills promptly

  • Do not allow water to sit on the surface for long periods

  • Reapply tung oil as needed (usually every 1–3 years, depending on use)

Regular, gentle care will keep the finish looking rich and natural for many years.

Minor Repairs

One of the biggest benefits of a tung oil finish is how easy it is to fix.

  • Small scratches or worn areas: Lightly rub the area with fine steel wool or a soft scuff pad, apply a small amount of tung oil, then wipe off the excess

  • Dry or faded spots: Clean the area and apply a fresh coat of oil to bring the color back

  • General refresh: A light cleaning and a maintenance coat can make the whole piece look renewed—no sanding or stripping required
